ETHM has been privileged to establish the Youth Development and Empowerment Program (YDEP) Institute inside Bladensburg High School (BHS) as of August 2005, at the invitation of the school’s and Prince George’s County Public Schools’ (PGCPS) Region II leadership.
ETHM’s YDEP Institute at BHS provides services and a full range of life skills development and education programs to Prince George’s County (PGC) citizens, particularly to youth, parents, teachers and other community citizens at BHS and the surrounding community. The PEACE Model, designed in 2005 by Reverend Addison, is the umbrella concept that conveys the goal of a holistic approach to life skills training and education that promotes PEACE—(Promoting Educational, Academic and Character Excellence).

Many new or newly enhanced programs are being implemented this past and upcoming year at Bladensburg High School, under the YDEP Institute’s PEACE Model, to integrate career pathing and character education into the academic curricula of students.
The programs of the YDEP Institute have been structured under ETHM’s Youth Development and Empowerment Model (YDEM), which was designed by the Reverend Gail A. Addison, President of ETHM, as a template for replication in any community that seeks to effectively involve youth in its community revitalization and economic development initiatives. |
From YDEM’s inception, ETHM has demonstrated that programs operated at the community level by and for community residents and within communities where citizens live, work, attend school, worship and do business have tremendous impact on the future personal lives of its citizens as well as the growth of their community because:
| 1. |
Youth are empowered as community leaders and stakeholders. |
| 2. |
Youth participate in their community’s revitalization and economic development initiatives (i.e., Port Towns Youth Council are non-voting members of the Port Towns Community Development Corporation [PTCDC]). |
| 3. |
Youth and parents build relationships between themselves and other citizens to prevent crime and violence in their communities. |
| 4. |
Youth are achieving literacy goals through one-to-one tutoring. |
| 5. |
Youth lead citizens in their community’s outreach activities such as beautification and clean-up activities as well as providing services to senior citizens and others in need. |
YDEM programs effectively link youth and their parents to the social and economic resources that in turn grow their communities and PGC at large.
Linking character development with academic achievement is essential for students to navigate through life successfully. This is the fundamental purpose of the YDEP Institute. |
