is a highly successful Livable Communities initiative. For 22 weeks, 151 volunteers, led by the Port Towns Youth Council (PTYC), filled 534 large black bags with trash and debris (including 89 bags of recyclable items). Project 450 was launched on Gorgeous Prince George’s Day, October 15, 2005. Students, parents and community citizens picked up trash and debris for 22 consecutive weeks (rain or shine) through April 29, 2006.
The PTYC’s diligence and commitment to enhancing the safety, health and beauty of the Port Towns community was publicly recognized on April 29, 2006 at the Project 450 Community Cleanup Awards Ceremony.
This public safety project also provided opportunity for students and all citizens to earn one to three community service hours for each Saturday served. Teamwork was the primary reason for the success of Project 450, and it is our hope that Project 450’s slogan will become a common practice in the Port Towns:
Be a Friend and Pitch In! SM
Se un Buen Amigo
y Contribuye a la Limpieza! SM

culminated with the installation of customized trash receptacles—one on every major street corner within the Port Towns communities. A total of seventy (70) beautiful trashcans were purchased just prior to Project 450’s anniversary on Gorgeous Prince George’s Day, October 14, 2006. These trashcans were designed by the Port Towns Youth Council, and the bilingual design has been copyrighted and service marked due to their uniqueness.
Funds to purchase the trashcans were provided by ETHM grants, Port Towns business owners, private citizens and a Livable Communities grant (through the Port Towns Community Development Corporation).
